I know you can hear, but are you listening?

“Glued to the television newscasts following the hurricane, I watched as an obviously poor African American woman was interviewed. She was trying to make her way into the Superdome, hoping to find shelter, food, and water. When the interviewer asked her what she thought of all she had been through, she said clearly and firmly, “God’s tellin’ us we need to repent of our sin.” “I wonder….how many people who heard what she had to say on the nightly news didn’t truly “listen” to her message? I expect it would be safe to assume that the majority of viewers that night just didn’t get it.” -Excerpt from EXPECTING to see JESUS by Ann Graham Lotz This excerpt jumped out at me while in my search for God’s guidance for these troubling days. I had already been sent to Isaiah 28:29 “This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance.” And while I know that God is the One in Whom we should seek wisdom and counsel from, the meaning of t...

The River Crossing

Image
Found this in my journal Dated July 1, 2014 In the early morning hours of July 1 st I woke up with a burden pressing on me. At first I tried to shake it off, tossing and turning, trying to find sleep. I finally sat up and asked the Lord what He would have me do. The Holy Spirit then led me to read Jeremiah 12:1-5. “ 1 You, O Lord are [uncompromisingly] righteous and consistently just when I plead my case with You; Yet let me discuss issues of justice with You: Why has the way of the wicked prospered? Why are those who deal in treachery (deceit) at ease and thriving? 2  You have planted them, they have also taken root; They grow, they have even produced fruit. You are honored by their [hypocritical] lips But [You are] far from their heart and mind. 3  But You, O Lord, know me [and understand my devotion to You]; You see me; And You examine the attitude of my heart toward You. Drag out the faithless like sheep for the slaughter [O Lord] And set them a...

Lay down what’s good and find what’s best

Image
38  Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39  And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40  But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” 41  And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42  But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)   I find it strange how different a person can be from one step of their Christian walk to the next. It is a path littered with highs and lows, mountains and valleys, pastures and deserts, palaces and wilderness……. We come to expect these things though, knowing that many before us traveled in the same manner. All for the good ...

Building Blocks

“If it is unacceptable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”     Joshua 24:15 If you would, stop for a moment and take stock of your location. Not physically but spiritually. Are you standing on the Rock of Salvation (grounded and rooted in Jesus Christ) or are you standing on the shifting sands of the world (following after your own thoughts, desires, and needs)? Please don’t disregard this. Your stance is important. There’s an old saying “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” And that is true, but it misses a significant truth that cannot be ignored. Is your foundation strong? Is what you are standing on sure and steady? Or are there cracks in the foundation? I...

Shine

Image
"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16). An important word for the LORD's children. A word we must always keep in our hearts because it describes what a Christian should look like. God said that His people are to be a "peculiar" people (1 Peter 2:9). So different than everyone else of the world that they would stand out noticeably, like a light in the dark. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean that Christians have a glamorous life. As a Christian, to be a light means that you have to act and react differently than what is natural when faced with the circumstances of life. For example, it would not be considered "natural" or "normal" to be joyful aft...

Desperate for Surrender

Image
Surrender An overused and greatly misunderstood word in today’s church. Do not get me wrong, surrendering to God is what we are purposed to do. The problem is that in today’s church, we speak a lot about surrendering to God, but bear no fruit of it. When we surrender ourselves over to Him, we should look more like Him. There are 9 specific fruits called out by Paul in the New Testament, but there is so much more to God than that. Yes, we should have His love, peace, joy, gentleness, kindness, self-control, humility, faithfulness, and patience, but Oh, how much more there is to God! Do we bear fruit of His mercy, compassion, holiness, righteousness, wisdom, strength, stability, forgiveness……..? I come not to beat you down, but to build you up my friend. I come broken just as you, struggling just as you. I come imperfect and lacking just as you. It is in His revelation that I speak. This word is for me just as much as it is for you. So given the revelation, here’s the qua...

What tomorrow holds......

Image
What tomorrow holds..... We plan, we organize, we worry, and agonize Over a thing we cannot hold, A thing we can never see. It has no taste, no sound, no scent, no being; And yet it changes every day. Some run after it, some run away. Dreams seek to rest on it, Its where our minds chose to stay. And yet it changes every day. What tomorrow holds only One truly knows. He is the Maker, omniscient, The only One who makes tomorrows. His word says to worry not, to make no plans; Because only He is in control, It all rests in His hands. He is the beginning and the end, Times upon times He sees. So when He says to not worry, It is His word I believe. I do not know what tomorrow holds, And cannot see what it brings; But I can hold onto my God, Who is good in all things. What tomorrow holds, Only He truly sees. I chose to trust in Him. Though tomorrow changes from day to day I know in whom I believe. This...
